How To Install Ubuntu On Windows Using VMware Workstation Player

Ubuntu is among the popular operating systems used for production and development purposes. It might be required to try it out or run in the dual-mode without allocating dedicated hardware to it. We can run it as a guest operating system on Windows Operating System using the VMware Workstation Player without actually installing it on dedicated hardware. This tutorial provides all the steps required to install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as a guest operating system on Windows 10 using the regular installation of VMware Workstation Player 15. The steps should be similar for other Linux operating systems.

Notes: Make sure that your Windows is 64-bit for optimal output and at least 8GB of memory is installed on the system having a multi-core processor to install Ubuntu On VMware Workstation Player. You may also follow the Easy Install Mode of VMware Workstation Player to do the quick installation of Ubuntu using default configurations by skipping the advanced configurations.

Prerequisites

This tutorial assumes that you have access to Windows System with at least 8 GB of memory and VMware Workstation Player is already installed on it. You can also follow How To Install VMware Workstation Player On Windows 10.

Download Ubuntu

Open the Official Page to download the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop. It provides the options to download Ubuntu Desktop as shown in Fig 1.

Create the Virtual Machine

In this step, we will create the Virtual Machine used to install Ubuntu On VMware Workstation Player. Launch the VMware Workstation Player if it's not running. It will show the Welcome Screen as shown in Fig 2.

Click the Player -> File -> New Virtual Machine OR Create a New Virtual Machine Link as highlighted in Fig 2. Choose the option - I will install the operating system later as shown in Fig 3.

Click the Next Button to choose the Operating System as shown in Fig 4.

Select Linux as the Guest operating system and Ubuntu 64-bit as the Version as shown in Fig 4. Now click the Next Button to configure virtual machine name and installation path as shown in Fig 5.

Click the Next Button to configure the disk and allocate space as shown in Fig 6.

The next screen provides options to confirm the virtual machine as shown in Fig 7.

We can also customize the hardware by clicking the Customize Hardware Button as highlighted in Fig 7. It will show the possible options to configure the virtual machine hardware as shown in Fig 8.

I have allocated 4GB of memory from 16GB and 4 cores from 16 cores to this virtual machine. It might differ on your system depending on your hardware. Also, choose the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS ISO as shown in Fig 8. Now click the Close Button to finalize the hardware for the virtual machine and click Finish Button to create the virtual machine. It will add the Virtual Machine to the VMware library as shown in Fig 9.

Install Ubuntu

In this step, we will install Ubuntu On VMware Workstation Player using the Virtual Machine created by us in the previous step. The player will also provide the options to install VMware Tools for Linux. Installing the VMware Tools is optional at this stage. We can always install it later. VMware Tools is required to have the optimal performance of the guest operating system installed on the virtual machine. Now start the virtual machine by clicking the Play Button as shown in Fig 9. It will start installing the Ubuntu as shown in Fig 10 and provides the options to choose the language as shown in Fig 11.

Choose appropriate language and click the Install Ubuntu Button. It will provide the options to choose the Keyboard Layout as shown in Fig 12.

Now click the Continue Button to choose installation type as shown in Fig 13 and Fig 14.

Click the Install Now Button to start installing Ubuntu 18.04. It will also ask to confirm the disk changes as shown in Fig 15.

Now click the Continue Button to choose the Timezone as shown in Fig 16 and also configure the root user as shown in Fig 17.

Now click the Continue Button to continue the installation. It will show the installation progress as shown in Fig 18 and Fig 19.

It will show the success message on completing the installation as shown in Fig 20.

Click the Restart Now Button to restart Ubuntu It will ask to remove the installation media as shown in Fig 21.

Simply press the Enter Key to continue. It will show the login screen as shown in Fig 22 and Fig 23.

Now enter the password provided by you while installing Ubuntu. The player will show the Ubuntu Dashboard as shown in Fig 24 and shows the intro steps as shown in Fig 25.

This completes the installation of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on Windows 10 using the VMware Workstation Player.

Install VMware Tools

It's preferred to install VMware Tools for optimal performance as mentioned by me in the previous step. To get more details, maximize the VMware Workstation Player. We can see that Ubuntu does not cover the entire area of the Window as shown in Fig 26.

Suspend, Resume, Stop, and Start

This section provides the options to either Suspend and Resume the virtual machine or to stop and start it.

Click the Pause Icon and click Suspend Guest to suspend the virtual machine as shown in Fig 27. It will save and preserve the state of the guest operating system.

It also asks to confirm the suspension as shown in Fig 28.

The VMware also shows the snapshot of the guest operating system in the suspended state as shown in Fig 29.

Now click the Play Button to resume it. The player shows the progress while restoring the virtual machine as shown in Fig 30.

It will open the guest operating system at the same state where we have left it. In this way, we won't lose any work.

We can even power off the virtual machine as shown in Fig 32 and Fig 33. The VMware player won't save the state of the powered-off virtual machines.

How to enable TPM 2.0 support in VMware Workstation Player for free

It can be quite a hassle to upgrade your main computer to Windows 11, just to roll back to Windows 10.  The best way to find out if you will like Windows 11, is by testing it first hand, on a virtual machine. We showed you ways to download the ISO, how to bypass the TPM restrictions, etc.

Last week, I wanted to try the latest build that was released to the Windows Insider Program, to try and see if there were some workarounds for some issues in it. But I had trouble enrolling into the Preview Program, because the guest operating system failed the requirement check, since my virtual machine does not have TPM.

I had faced a similar issue before the stable version of Windows 11 was released, and used the free trial of VMware Workstation Pro to bypass the issue, since it had an option to enable TPM 2.0 support. The free version of the software does not have that. There is a way to fix this.

Note: Please do not try this with an existing virtual machine, as it may corrupt it. I'd also advise taking a backup of your data before you delete the current VM, to make space for a new one.

A tweet posted by Michael Roy, a VMWare Product Manager, confirmed that users of the free VMWare Workstation can enable TPM, with a simple tweak. The option works with VMWare Workstation Player 16.2 and above, which you can download from the official website.

How to enable TPM 2.0 support in VMware Workstation Player for free

1. Create a new guest OS in VMware Workstation Player. Don't install Windows 11 just yet.

2. Exit the program, and navigate to the folder which has your virtual machine's settings, and look for the .VMX file. Open it with a text editor like Notepad, and add the following line to it.

managedvm.autoAddVTPM = "software"

Save the document and close the text editor. This flag, enables TMP 2.0 in VMware Workstation Player, without encrypting the VM completely. According to the tweet, the VM is encrypted partially without a password, which should offer better performance than a full encrypted copy of the virtual machine.

3. Start the application, and install Windows 11 normally. You may use Window Insider Preview ISOs too.

If you shut down the operating system, and run VMware Workstation Player again, you will see a padlock icon next to the OS indicating that it encrypted. Access the virtual machine's settings, and it will list TPM as an option, though you can't edit it with the free version of the application. If you want further confirmation that TPM is working correctly, install and run the PC Health Check app in your VM, and it should no longer say that your computer doesn't support TPM 2.0.

How to disable side channel mitigations in VMware Player 

On a side note, VMware Player recently started displaying a warning on my computer. It said that there maybe some performance degradation with side channel mitigations enabled. (Reference: Support page)

I'm not really sure if it has something to do with the Trial version of the Pro variant that I had been using, so I ignored it and tried using the VM, but it was really slow and simple actions like opening files took a long time to complete. It turns out the message about side channel mitigation appears when Hyper-V is enabled in the host, Windows. The support article mentions an option that you can toggle, but it seems to be exclusive to the Workstation Pro version. The option can be found here: Edit Virtual Machine Settings > Options >Advanced >Settings.

A solution for this issue was available at the company's community forums. If you are using the free version of VMWare Workstation Player, you can edit your VMX file to add the following line to it.

ulm.disableMitigations="TRUE"

Setting that option to true fixed the lags I had in the Windows 11 virtual machine., so try that to see if it helps you.

What are Workstation Pro's capabilities?

VMware Workstation Pro is the Hercules of virtualization applications, with impressive scalability, capacity, portability, and an overall rich feature set.

Virtual machines have become an important part of computing, not least for business and especially for cloud computing. However, virtualization is something also available to home users as well.

VMware offers a very comprehensive selection of virtualization products, with Fusion for the Apple Mac and Workstation Player for the PC.

Despite the name difference, these two products offer effectively the same solution, though tailored to each host OS.

For the Mac that includes a neat ‘Unity Mode’ that enables Mac OS to launch Windows applications from the Dock and have them appear like they’re part of the host OS.

Workstation, as the version numbering suggests, is a more mature product and delivers one of the most sophisticated VM implementations seen so far.

Being one of the few hosts that supports DirectX 10 and OpenGL 3.3, it allows CAD and other GPU accelerated applications to work under virtualization.

Workstation Player for Windows or Linux is free for personal use, though Pro is required for business users, and those wanting to run restricted VMs created using Pro or Fusion Pro.

Not sure what operating systems you are likely to use? Then VirtualBox is a good choice because it supports an amazingly wide selection of host and client combinations.

Windows from XP onwards, any Linux level 2.4 or better, Windows NT, Server 2003, Solaris, OpenSolaris and even OpenBSD Unix. There are even people that nostalgically run Windows Vmware Workstation For Windows or even IBM OS/2 on their modern systems,

It also runs on Apple Mac, and for Apple users, it can host a client Mac VM session.

Oracle has been kind enough to support VirtualBox, and provide a wide selection of pre-built developer VMs to download and use at no cost.

And, all this is free, even the Enterprise release.

Boot Camp is Apple’s free tool for running a Virtual session under macOS, but those that need to do this on a regular basis use Parallels Desktop, now owned by software behemoth Corel.

It enables users to seamlessly run Windows alongside macOS, for those awkward moments when they need software that only works on that platform.

A few of the elegant things that Parallels can do is make Windows alerts appear in the Mac notification center, and operate a unified clipboard.

Most Mac users think of Parallels as a tool exclusively for using Windows, but it can be used to host a wide range of Linux distros, Chrome OS (which the best Chromebooks run) and even other (and older) versions of Mac OS.

4. QEMU

The QEMU website isn’t very sophisticated, but don’t let that put you off.

Where this product slightly differs from other VM solutions is that it is both a VM host and also a machine emulator.  Along with x86 PC, QEMU can emulate PowerPC, MIPS64, ARM, SPARC (32 and 64), MicroBlaze, ETRAX CRIS, SH4 and RISC-V, among others.

It manages to do this without administrator privileges, and the performance of VMs running on it is close to that of native installations.

What QEMU lacks is any sophisticated interface tools, instead relying on CLI inputs to install and configure VM clients.

At this time it is also only able to host on Linux, even if it can run a wide range of operating systems under that.

5. Citrix Hypervisor

Oddly, Citrix Hypervisor started life as an open source project, and to this day it remains free to download and install. Or rather the basic version is free, but advanced features are restricted to paid tier releases.

Paying customers get sophisticated management tools, the ability to automate and distribute live environments at will. It also has the GPU pass-through and virtualized GPU capabilities, allowing it to offer virtualized CAD for example.

The other thrust of XenServer is to create virtual data centers that can handle planned and unplanned outages equally smoothly, and maintain the high levels of availability that business expects.

How to Create a Windows 11 Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation

Windows 11 has more security requirements than previous versions of Windows. The main requirements are the use of a TPM 2.0 chip (TPM 2.0 can be enabled in your BIOS if you have current hardware) and Secure Boot. If you want to try Windows 11, you can install it as a virtual machine using virtualization software like VMware Workstation.

VMware Requirements

According to VMware’s documentation, this feature requires VMware Workstation Pro 14.0 or higher and a minimum hardware version of 14 that uses the UEFI firmware type. The other hardware minimum requirements for Windows 11 include 4GB RAM and a 64GB hard drive.

Enable UEFI and Secure Boot in VMware Workstation

  • Open VMware Workstation and select your Virtual Machine (or create one)
  • Go to the VM Menu and select Settings, then go to the Options tab and Access Control:
    VMware TPM 1
  • Click on the Encrypt button in the Encryption section, then create an encryption password
  • Click on Advanced and under Firmware Type, select UEFI and Enable Secure Boot

Add TPM in VMware Workstation

  • Go to the Hardware tab in your Virtual Machine Settings and click Add:
    VMware TPM 2
  • Select Trusted Platform Module
  • Click Finish and OK

This should complete the steps needed to add the hardware requirements for Windows 11 to be able to install it as a virtual machine in VMware Workstation Pro. You’ll want to set the other minimum hardware requirements such as disk space, memory and CPUs. From here, you’ll need to download the Windows 11 ISO and mount it and go through the setup process.

Microsoft now offers a way to Bypass TPM 2.0 and CPU Requirements to Install Windows 11 if you currently have Windows 10 in your virtual machine and want to upgrade it to Windows 11.

How to enable TPM 2.0 support in VMware Workstation Player for free

It can be quite a hassle to upgrade your main computer to Windows 11, just to roll back to Windows 10.  The best way to find out if you will like Windows 11, is by testing it first hand, on a virtual machine. We showed you ways to download the ISO, how to bypass the TPM restrictions, etc.

Last week, I wanted to try the latest build that was released to the Windows Insider Program, to try and see if there were some workarounds for some issues in it. But I had trouble enrolling into the Preview Program, because the guest operating system failed the requirement check, since my virtual machine does not have TPM.

I had faced a similar issue before the stable version of Windows 11 was released, and used the free trial of VMware Workstation Pro to bypass the issue, since it had an option to enable TPM 2.0 support. The free version of the software does not have that. There is a way to fix this.

Note: Please do not try this with an existing virtual machine, as it may corrupt it. I'd also advise taking a backup of your data before you delete the current VM, to make space for a new one.

A tweet posted by Michael Roy, a VMWare Product Manager, confirmed that users of the free VMWare Workstation can enable TPM, with a simple tweak. The option works with VMWare Workstation Player 16.2 and above, which you can download from the official website.

How to enable TPM 2.0 support in VMware Workstation Player for free

1. Create a new guest OS in VMware Workstation Player. Don't install Windows 11 just yet.

2. Exit the program, and navigate to the folder which has your virtual machine's settings, and look for the .VMX file. Open it with a text editor like Notepad, and add the following line to it.

managedvm.autoAddVTPM = "software"

Save the document and close the text editor. This flag, enables TMP 2.0 in VMware Workstation Player, without encrypting the VM completely. According to the tweet, the VM is encrypted partially without a password, which should offer better performance than a full encrypted copy of the virtual machine.

3. Start the application, and install Windows 11 normally. You may use Window Insider Preview ISOs too.

If you shut down the operating system, and run VMware Workstation Player again, you will see a padlock icon next to the OS indicating that it encrypted. Access the virtual machine's settings, and it will list TPM as an option, though you can't edit it with the free version of the application. If you want further confirmation that TPM is working correctly, install and run the PC Health Check app in your VM, and it should no longer say that your computer doesn't support TPM 2.0.

How to disable side channel mitigations in VMware Player 

On a side note, VMware Player recently started displaying a warning on my computer. It said that there maybe some performance degradation with side channel mitigations enabled. (Reference: Support page)

I'm not really sure if it has something to do with the Trial version of the Pro variant that I had been using, so I ignored it and tried using the VM, but it was really slow and simple actions like opening files took a long time to complete. It turns out the message about side channel mitigation appears when Hyper-V is enabled in the host, Windows. The support article mentions an option that you can toggle, but it seems to be exclusive to the Workstation Pro version. The option can be found here: Edit Virtual Machine Settings > Options >Advanced >Settings.

A solution for this issue was available at the company's community forums. If you are using the free version of VMWare Workstation Player, you can edit your VMX file to add the following line to it.

ulm.disableMitigations="TRUE"

Setting that option to true fixed the lags I had in the Windows 11 virtual machine., so try that to see if it helps you.

How To Install Ubuntu On Vmware Workstation For Windows Using VMware Workstation Player

Ubuntu is among the popular operating systems used for production and development purposes. It might be required to try it out or run in the dual-mode without allocating dedicated hardware to it. We can run it as a guest operating system on Windows Operating System using the VMware Workstation Player without actually installing it on dedicated hardware. This tutorial provides all the steps required to install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as a guest operating system on Windows 10 using the regular installation of VMware Workstation Player 15. The steps should be similar for other Linux operating systems.

Notes: Make sure that your Windows is 64-bit for optimal output and at least 8GB of memory is installed on the system having a multi-core processor to install Ubuntu On VMware Workstation Player. You may also follow the Easy Install Mode of VMware Workstation Player to do the quick installation of Ubuntu using default configurations by skipping the advanced configurations.

Prerequisites

This tutorial assumes that you have access to Windows System with at least 8 GB of memory and VMware Workstation Player is already installed on it. You can also follow How To Install VMware Workstation Player On Windows 10.

Download Ubuntu

Open the Official Page to download the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop. It provides the options to download Ubuntu Desktop as shown in Fig 1.

Create the Virtual Machine

In this step, we will create the Virtual Machine used to install Ubuntu On VMware Workstation Player. Launch the VMware Workstation Player if it's not running. It will show the Welcome Screen as shown in Fig 2.

Click the Player -> File -> New Virtual Machine OR Create a New Virtual Machine Link as highlighted in Fig 2. Choose the option - I will install the operating system later as shown in Fig 3.

Click the Next Button to choose the Operating System as shown in Fig 4.

Select Linux as the Guest operating system and Ubuntu 64-bit as the Version as shown in Fig 4. Now click the Next Button to configure virtual machine name and installation path as shown in Fig 5.

Click the Next Button to configure the disk and allocate space as shown in Fig 6.

The next screen Vmware Workstation For Windows options to confirm the virtual machine as shown in Fig 7.

We can also customize the hardware by clicking the Customize Hardware Button as highlighted in Fig 7. It will show the possible options to configure the how to use wintousb - Free Activators machine hardware as shown in Fig 8.

I have allocated 4GB of memory from 16GB and 4 cores from 16 cores to this virtual machine. It might differ on your system depending on your hardware. Also, choose the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS ISO as shown in Fig 8. Now click the Close Button to finalize the hardware for the virtual machine and click Finish Button to create the virtual machine. It will add the Virtual Machine to the VMware library as shown in Fig 9.

Install Ubuntu

In this step, we will install Ubuntu On VMware Workstation Player using the Virtual Machine created by us in the previous step. The player will also provide the options to install VMware Tools for Linux. Installing the VMware Tools is optional at this stage. We can always install it later. VMware Tools is required to have the optimal performance of the guest operating system installed on the virtual machine. Now start the virtual machine by clicking the Play Button as shown in Fig 9. It will start installing the Ubuntu as shown in Fig 10 and provides the options to choose the language as shown in Fig 11.

Choose appropriate language and click the Install Ubuntu Button. It will provide the options to choose the Keyboard Layout as shown in Fig 12.

Now click the Continue Button to choose installation type as shown in Fig Vmware Workstation For Windows and Fig 14.

Click the Install Now Button to start installing Ubuntu 18.04. It will also ask to confirm the disk changes as shown in Fig 15.

Now click the Continue Button to choose the Timezone as shown in Fig 16 and also configure the root user as shown in Fig 17.

Now click the Continue Button to continue the installation. It will show the installation progress as shown in Fig 18 and Fig 19.

It will show the success message on completing the installation as shown in Fig 20.

Click the Restart Now Button to restart Ubuntu It will ask to remove the installation media as shown in Fig 21.

Simply press the Enter Key to continue. It will show the login screen as shown in Fig 22 and Fig 23.

Now enter the password provided by you while installing Ubuntu. The player will show the Ubuntu Dashboard as shown in Fig 24 and shows the intro steps as shown in Fig 25.

This completes the installation of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on Windows 10 using the VMware Workstation Player.

Install VMware Tools

It's preferred to install VMware Tools for optimal performance as mentioned by me in the previous step. To get more details, maximize the VMware Workstation Player. We can see that Vmware Workstation For Windows does not cover the entire area of the Window as shown in Fig 26.

Suspend, Resume, Stop, and Start

This section provides the options to either Suspend and Resume the virtual machine or to stop and start it.

Click the Pause Icon and click Suspend Guest to suspend the virtual machine as shown in Fig 27. It will save and preserve the state of the guest operating system.

It also asks to confirm the suspension as shown in Fig 28.

The VMware also shows the snapshot of the guest operating system in the suspended state as shown in Fig 29.

Now click the Play Button to resume it. The player shows the progress while restoring the virtual machine as shown in Fig 30.

  1. This seems like the best arrangement yet. My First thought was to just drop the "Life is" words, and it cleans it up from the videos' proposed solution: The "life is" definitely does not belong where the video shows them placed (11:07).
