Beyond Compare is the file-comparison tool you need

Throughout my isolation-induced technology shenanigans, I’ve come across one tool that has proved absolutely critical in scanning through old hard drives: Scooter Software’s Beyond Compare.

If you’ve got a need to compare folders, text files, image files—really, anything that can be compared, Beyond Compare is the app you want. I looked at a handful of other comparison tools and spent a lot of time searching the web, trying to figure out the best way to reconcile lots of old files, and Beyond Compare was the one tool I found continually name-checked—and, as it turns out, for good reason.

Beyond Compare

Essentially, you can drag any two folders into Beyond Compare’s two panes and have it compare their contents. You can choose to have it show only the files that are missing on Corel Videostudio Pro 2021 23.3.0.646 Crack - Activators Patch side or the other, or all of the differences in files, or even just the files that are the same. Plus, beyond compare software can add filters that exclude certain filename patterns (for example, I frequently set it up to ignore directories that begin with a period, since those hidden files are generally configuration files I didn’t care about).

Beyond Compare excels when comparing identical or very similar folder structures, and it offers options for comparing files, folder structure, both, or neither. But there are also commands that help when things don’t line up quite right. For example, the “Align with…” command lets you line up two sub-directories to compare, even if they don’t have the same name. If you need to go more in depth on files, Beyond Compare can also compare images and text documents, and can even beyond compare software side-by-side hex comparisons, which is way more than I need, but will doubtless prove useful to others.

The app can be a little tricky to use: it took me a while to get the hang of it, figuring out which views I wanted, and what all the various colored icons meant. (Purple, for example, are orphans—files on one side that aren’t on another, whereas red just means there are differences within the files.) One complication arose from the fact that my Synology NAS, which is now my official file server, is formatted with the BTRFS filesystem, and several of my older files got renamed, leading to lots of file differences that were merely differences in file name, not in content.1

I’ve spent a lot of time in Beyond Compare over the last few weeks, and I definitely got more adroit at using it as time went by, though I’m certain I missed features that could have saved me even more time. In the end, it still didn’t handle exactly the task I’d like it to—namely, scan a folder hierarchy and tell me all the files that are missing from another drive—but that’s a pretty intensive procedure that I frankly couldn’t find any software to handle. So I ended up spending a little more time manually drilling down into folder hierarchies and comparing file sizes and dates.

Despite those travails, Beyond Compare has proved to be more than worth its $30 price tag, not least of all for the peace of mind it brings in being sure that I have all of the data I want. (And, I’ll add, it has an extensive—and perhaps even too generous trial option that allowed me to do pretty much all of my comparisons for free, so I made sure to buy a license anyway.) If your file comparison needs are even more in-depth—say you need to handle three-file comparisons or folder merges—there’s also a $60 Pro version, but for most users, the standard will probably suffice.

NOTE:
You can change the destination folder for the BC2007.dll (BC100.dll) file. When you do select a different beyond compare software folder only the BC2007.dll file is copied to the destination folder.
The destination folder will be created if it doesn't already exists.
When uninstalling you can choose to delete the BC2007.dll (BC100.dll) file from your system. This is the only file that will be deleted though.

FUNCTIONALITY

When installed correctly a new item is added to the edit menu. This item is called "Compare" and has six sub menu items.

History Compare History Compare

Grabs the currently selected file and displays the available history versions to compare against.

NOTE:
This functionality requires the BCDiffer.exe application installed. This application is available form the Registered Users page for BDS2006. Just copy the BCDiffer.* files into your D2007 folder

Compare File Buffer Compare current buffer

This command is only active when the selected source or form is modified.

ADVANCED SAVE PROMPT

After installing the Beyond Compare IDE Expert into your IDE you now have an updated Save Prompt. When you go to close a file that hasn't been saved yet the new prompt allows you to compare unsaved changes.

The old save prompt

Old save prompt

The new save prompt

New save prompt

New save prompt is a TJSDialog

As you can see the new save prompt has some new features.
  1. A new button labelled View Changes
  2. Radiobuttons to choose which file to view the changes of (when the file being closed has a form associated with it)
When you click on the View Changes button, Beyond Compare will start and allow you to compare the current unsaved* buffer to the previously saved version of the file. For source files you can actually modify the unsaved buffer and have these changes applied when you return to the save prompt and select the Yes button.
Currently you can only view changes associated with a form file.

Some files do not support using the View Changes button. In these circumstances the View Changes button is disabled. One example for when the View Changes button is disabled is when the save prompt is about saving a Project Group.

* A temp file is created in your system temp directory.

ITEMS OF NOTE

  • If you do a "Compare to File." on a project file (*.dpr) you will be prompted by a dialog that allows you to select other project.* files for the comparison.
  • You can also add the commands to the TOOLBAR and they will persist between IDE sessions.
  • To give the new Save Dialog prompt a more Vista like look under Microsoft Windows XP, rename the "bcoptions.ini_" file included in the zip to "bcoptions.ini", and copy it to the same folder as the BC2007.dll file. If you copied the DLL to a different destination, make sure you put the ini file in the correct folder.

KNOWN ISSUES

  1. When comparing a forms current buffer to the previously saved form you cannot merge changes. The comparison is read only.

    Data comparison software

Beyond Compare is a data comparison utility. Aside from comparing files, the program is capable of doing side-by-side comparison of directories, FTP and SFTP directories, Dropbox directories, Amazon S3 directories, and archives.[1] It is available for Windows, Mac OS, and Linuxoperating systems. A strength of Beyond Compare is that it can be configured as difftool and mergetool of version control systems, such as git.[2]

    Reception[edit]

In an April 2009 review, Beyond Compare was awarded four out of five stars by CNET. The reviewers initially found the user interface to be "a little overwhelming", but "quickly got the hang of it", after using the program for a little while.[3]PC World writer Michael Desmond included the program in a 2005 list of utilities for a "Trouble-Free PC".[4] He highlighted the program's "watch list" feature for particular acclaim.[4] Beyond Compare was featured in the March 2005 issue of the Windows IT Pro magazine, in the "What's Hot" section.[5]

Scott Mitchell, writing for MSDN Magazine, identified the program's comparison rules as its most powerful feature.[6] The customizable rules control which differences between two files should be flagged as such. A set of predefined rules are included for the comparison of common file types, such as C++ source code, XML, and HTML files.[6]

Beyond Compare Tips and Tricks

Beyond Compare contains a lot of useful features. Here are some that we've found particularly handy.

Toggle whether or not some of lines of context should be displayed around differences when the 'Show Diffs' filter is selected by using the this button on the toolbar:

Saving a Session

Sessions can be saved in Beyond Compare so that you can access them without having to navigate through the VC/m interface to begin the session over.

1. After having begun your session by using the 'Compare' option in VC/m, choose File -> Save from the menu bar in Beyond Compare.

A small dialog should open with a folder tree. We would recommend that you create a subfolder called 'VC/m' and save your session with an descriptive name. The screenshot below gives an example.

Setting a monospace font

It is recommended that you set a monospace font for listing folders in Beyond Compare. UC Browser For PC Cracked Apk Free Downloader Latest 2021 This makes it easier to view and find the object versions you want to find in the Beyond Compare interface.

1. From the menu bar in Beyond Compare, choose Tools -> Options

2. In the dialog that opens, select Folder Views -> Display from the navigation tree.

3. Uncheck the 'Use system' checkbox' and press the 'Font.' button.

4. Choose a monospace font such as Courier New or Consolas and press OK.

Setting rules for ignoring particular differences

Some files contain data that is likely to differ between two versions, even if no changes have been made. A good example is the CLS component which contains an export timestamp and a checksum. These will differ between two CLS components, even if their class definitions are identical. Things like this can be distracting when comparing files, so Beyond Compare gives you the option of setting rules to ignore certain differences.

1. Open up a session comparing two components. For this example, we are going to compare a CLS component and its direct descendent. iobit uninstaller 8 pro - Activators Patch

2. With the two documents side-by-side, choose File -> Session Settings from the menu bar. prestosoft - Activators Patch

3. On the 'Importance' tab, click on the 'Edit Grammer.' button, and on the dialog that opens, click on the first 'New.' button.

4. On the next dialog, select the 'Delimited' category and enter your 'Text from' and 'to'. The screenshot below shows settings that ignore the export timestamp that is generated in a CLS component.

5. Click OK on the dialog, and OK on the dialog underneath. The 'Session Settings' dialog should remain. Here, uncheck the new grammar element you just created (this changes it from Important to Unimportant).

6. Optional: Before clicking OK on the Session Settings dialog, you can save the rule as a default for all new sessions but changing the value of the select box from 'Use for this view only' to 'Also update session defaults' Aiseesoft FoneLab iPhone Data Recovery Free Download

Diff Tools on Windows

Meld

Being free and open source, Meld is a very popular tool on Windows (it's also available for Linux). It supports three-way comparing and merging and lets you edit files directly from the comparison view. Apart from diffing files, Meld also supports comparison of folders.

Beyond Compare

The Beyond Compare team makes a fine diff tool for Windows (as well as macOS and Linux, by the way). It goes well beyond (pun intended) diffing simple text and also allows comparing PDF, Excel and image files. The "Pro" version also includes a solid three-way merge.

Araxis Merge

Just like Beyond Compare, Araxis Merge supports more than just text and image files. It also lets you compare office documents (like MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, or ODF). It comes in standard and professional editions, and for people working on both Windows and macOS, it's good to know that a single license is valid for both platforms.

KDiff3

Another free and open source tool answers to the name of KDiff3. The project hasn't seen many updates in recent years (though you may be able to find more recent releases through this page), but it remains a solid diff and merge tool that should satisfy basic needs.

DeltaWalker

Much like Araxis, the DeltaWalker diff tool also lets you compare office files. However, it goes one step further by letting you compare file archives like ZIP, JAR, and TAR files. If you're regularly performing comparisons on a folder basis, it's good to know that DeltaWalker shines with great performance in this area. DeltaWalker supports Windows, macOS and Linux.

P4Merge

Perforce, the company best known for its enterprise version control platform, also offers a solid diff tool: P4Merge is free of charge and comes with a basic feature set that makes it an interesting option on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Code Compare

Besides offering all the standard diff and merge capabilities, Code Compare comes with some special features like syntax highlighting, semantic code comparison and a VisualStudio integration.
The basic version can be used free of charge, while the Professional Edition delivers the full feature set.

WinMerge

WinMerge is an open-source diff tool with some nice features like folder and image comparison, and three-way file comparison.

Guiffy

Guiffy is a full-featured tool with syntax highlighting, three-way comparisons and merges, and multiple comparison algorithms. It comes in pro and expert versions, and supports Windows, macOS and Linux.

Integrations

Another aspect to watch out for is integrations: before choosing your favorite tool, you should make sure that it plays nicely with the rest of your tool chain. I can already confirm that most of the mentioned tools work seamlessly with Tower, our own Git client.

If you don't need the power of a dedicated Diff tool application, the integrated diff views in Tower might even be sufficient for you:

See for yourself and try it 30 days for free.

Conclusion

Diff & merge apps are amongst the most underestimated tools. But a good one can be really helpful in a lot of situations. Try one of the above and see for yourself!

    • If you do a "Compare to File..." on a project file (*.dpr) you will be prompted by a dialog that allows you to select other project.* files for the comparison.
