MacOS: get full instructions for downloading and installing Microsoft Office 2019
Download and unzip the files
Visit the software downloads page on the UBIT website, select your device type (Windows or Mac), and pick Microsoft Office 2019 from the list of available software.
After you download the file, unzip it and run the installer. If you’re installing Office 2019 on Windows, all you have to do is right-click the installer, select Run as Administrator, and following the instructions on screen.
If you’re installing the Mac version, you’ll also have to run the included serializer file.
Mac: run both files
It is important for those installing Office 2019 on a Mac to run both the installer and serializer files, in that order. If you don’t run the serializer, you will be stopped when you try to run an Office program and prompted to either buy a copy of Office, or log in with another account.
Running the serializer fixes this problem. Once you run the serlializer, you should be able to begin using Word, PowerPoint, Excel and every other Office program immediately.
Get updated automatically
Once you run both files, you can configure your version of Office 2019 to automatically download and install the latest features and security fixed. Just go to Help and select Check for Updates, and select Automatically Download and Install.

When you install a volume license version of Office Standard or Office Professional Plus on a new PC, you might be prompted with a Let's get started screen each time you start Office. This can happen if you don't uninstall the pre-installed version of Office on your new PC before installing a volume license version of Office.
To stop the prompts for activation, make sure your Office uses volume licensing and then update the registry.
Verify that your Office version uses volume licensing
Volume license versions of Office are typically used by large organizations. Here's how to check if your version of Office uses volume licensing:
Open a document in Word.
Go to File > Account.
Compare your screen to this screen shot and look for the following.
Volume license versions are named Office Standard or Office Professional Plus
Volume license versions have a Change Product Key link.
If you see buttons named Manage Account or Update Options, you're not using a volume license version of Office. For help with activating other versions of Office, see Activate Office.
Update the registry to remove the Microsoft 365 activation prompt
Important: This task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
Close the activation window and all Office apps.
Right-click the Start button on the lower-left corner of your screen, and select Run.
Type regedit, and then press Enter. Select Yes when prompted to open the Registry Editor.
On the left side of the Registry Editor, under Computer, navigate to the following key in the registry:
Right click the OEM value and click File>Export.
Save the key.
After the key is backed up, select Edit>Delete.
Repeat steps 3-6 for the following key:
Close the Registry Editor and start Office again.
However, if you do want the standalone Microsoft Office apps to keep using Office for free that way, here are the links for Android devices:
Furthermore, you can find the Microsoft Corporation App Store page here, which includes links to the various free Microsoft Office apps for iPhone and iPad.
3. Sign Up for the Microsoft 365 Trial
Office 2019 introduced numerous changes across the suite. If you haven't already signed up to Office 2019 elsewhere, you can give it a try before emptying your pockets. As such, you can take a free one-month Microsoft 365 trial.
The trial will grant you access to the full Microsoft Office 2019 suite. Also, you get 1TB OneDrive cloud storage and 60 minutes of Skype credits per month. Of course, there is a "catch." You must provide a valid credit, debit, or PayPal account during the sign-up process. Microsoft will automatically charge your account once your trial expires.
4. How About the Office 365 ProPlus Trial?
Once your 30-day Microsoft Office 365 trial comes to an end, you'll either be sold or ready to try something different. Alternatively, why not try another trial? This time using the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus trial.
You get another 30 days to test Microsoft Office 2019 and access to the same range of Microsoft Office programs as before.
5. Buy Hardware With Microsoft Office Bundled
Microsoft Office rarely comes bundled with a new desktop or laptop. Unless it is a specific introductory deal, you'll be purchasing Microsoft Office as an add-on. And if you're building your own PC, well, you're straight out of luck.
That said, these types of deals aren't impossible—you just have to strike while the iron is hot. Unfortunately, that means you need a circumstantial trifecta: new hardware with a bundle deal, the money to take advantage of said deal, and the need to actually upgrade your hardware.
Here are three examples of laptops that include a free Microsoft Office license:
Acer Aspire One 14
The Acer Aspire One 14" comes from Acer's Cloudbook series, most of which feature a free one-year subscription to Microsoft 365. The Aspire One 14" includes an Intel Celeron N3050 processor, 2GB RAM, and 32GB storage.
HP Stream 14
The HP Stream 14 is a smart, slimline laptop that features an Intel Celeron N4000 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and includes a one-year Microsoft 365 subscription.
The Asus L210 is an ultra-thin 11.6" laptop. It comes equipped with an Intel Celeron N4020 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a one-year subscription to Microsoft 365.
6. Ask Your Employer or School
Everything we've covered so far allows you to grab Microsoft Office for free, but also comes with limitations: availability, functionality, hardware. However, this penultimate option offers some of you a very good chance of acquiring a full version of Microsoft Office 2019 or Microsoft Office 365 completely free.
First, you'll have to check in with your employer, or if you're a student, your school. Many companies and schools can offer either a free or extremely low-cost Microsoft Office license for one reason: the people working or studying there need it. Businesses will have to pay, but bulk licenses may mean your employer can provide a free or cheap option.
Furthermore, Microsoft has long supported schools with free Office 365 Education packages. It might be that you have to ask directly.
You Have Many Ways to Grab Microsoft Office for Free
Grabbing a full version of Microsoft Office for free isn't possible for everyone. But you've got some excellent options, nonetheless. The combination of free Office 365 and Office 365 ProPlus trials grants you 60 days of Microsoft Office, and the mobile versions of Office allow you free use for as long as you want.
While the Office mobile apps are limited, they're very functional, especially on larger screens.
Free database software isn't all bad. This article covers five of the best free and easy to use alternatives to Microsoft Access.
